Feminist Thought

Below is a link for a trailer to an upcoming documentary about the “Miss” representation of women by the media. This is the first of many video clips/trailers I found on this issue. It all came to light for me one night when I was trying to find something on TV to watch that would put me to sleep. I came across this reality show on Oxygen (I think) called Bad Girls Club. In the 7 minutes I managed to watch 4 fights (3 of which one women was being jumped on by at least 3 other women), numerous curse words being screamed back and forth (with all of the proper “bleeps” for the Bitches of course), and women throwing each others clothes, shoes, cell phones in swimming pools, bathtubs, and toilets. I thought to myself, no wonder we have young girls and teenage girls who are so evil to one another. These are the images that females, especially Black females see daily. Our place and role in society has been made clear to us from way back in the day when we were depicted as big busted, round smiley faced, jolly women who had a “grandmother/slave” disposition. From there when we complained and struggled to change our image, we were given the “opportunity” to show ourselves as sexy…and only sexy. Though many may have seen this as beauty, if has come at a price that is detrimental to us. Our young ladies are learning how to “sex it up” and keep it “sexy” for Black and White men alike. We hate on, pick on, and rip each other apart and what is it all for??? Though I truly believe that Black women have it even harder than White women or others, this clip has taught me something that is solemnly powerful about being a female in general……we must begin to teach our young girls better so that they will know better and act better as they mature and grow into women. Mean Girls, Video Vixens, Pretty Little Liars, Bad Girls Club, Real Housewives, Basketball Wives…WHY?
