The Tale of an HBCU with a 90% White Student Population

Bluefield college 5

One of the most interesting stories regarding Higher Education that I have come across recently is about an HBCU, Bluefield State (Historically named Bluefield Colored Institute), that now has a 90% White student population. I must admit, that I have never come across any other stories on the history of the declining Black student population at this institution, nor have I ever heard much about it at all. But it was both shocking and sad to learn what has come of the legacy of this institution. Below is the link to what I read about it. I encourage you to read it and comment if you would like to share your thoughts!

  1. Why do you have a picture of Bluefield College (Virginia) in your story about Bluefield State College (West Virginia)? Oh, and where would I actually find “the tale”?

  2. I read the story linked from your post. I knew BSC was an his historically black college but had no knowledge of the happenings of the 60s there. I commuted to BSC from Davy WV (about an hour and a half drive), went to my classes during the day then went to work at night. Even though I was just out of high school, there was no “college life” for me. I was too busy. The first time I heard the alma matter song was at graduation rehearsal. I don’t know anyone from my classes at BSC that I didn’t know from some place else. The statement in the article is so true, BSC was just a place to take classes on my way to somewhere else.

I enjoyed learning about the schools history and the pride of its alumni from the early day. It sounds like it was a great place to go to school then. It only took me 30 years after graduating to learn about it. Thank you.

    • Oh, I’d still change the picture. Funny story, I met a black lady who went to Bluefield College here in Colorado.
