Linux is free powerful, robust and any and everyone should be considering. It gives you the chance to explore computing in a way thats impossbile with windows or mac.
Linux is actually a very adaptable, flexible and powerful operating system – and it doesn’t cost you a penny either. Sure, it’s not really that popular – in August 2012 (the latest month for which I could find reliable statistics), Linux on the desktop only took a pitiful 5.0% of the total operating system share, but its technology powers much more, for example servers and Unix (which Linux is based on), has also found its way into other products such as OS X and iOS (which are based on BSD which is, in turn, based on Unix).
Why you should be scared of linux. This is a overview, I have used it daily for the last 10 years now and I don’t miss windows at all, matter of fact, I’ve forgotten all of the issues that plague windows users, such as anti-virus, malware, poor window performance, the need for increasingly powerful hardware oh and the cost of the latest greatest.
with that being said, give it a shot, it can’t hurt.
I may have to look into this because my computer has Windows 8….and I fucking despise it.
I wonder why the NAACP hasn’t gotten behind the use of Linux? I haven’t owned a copy of windows since version 3.1 and I haven’t missed it either.

I’d suggest you give Xubuntu a whirl. That is Ubuntu with the XFCE desktop… which is closer to XP with look ‘n feel. You’ll never pay for software again, nor have to pay the world’s richest white guy for the “priviledge” of running your own machine as a server. That is pure crazy.

Not bad choices but for an absolute beginner with all the curves and adjustments that need to be made, I would recommend Mint with Cinnamon and when she get’s hardcore, because she will, on to linux from scratch!
I am however unsure why there hasn’t been a big technological push, but my guess would be that there are not a lot of Black people who use open source software, hell, there are not a lot of American people who use open source software, but that a Microsoft and cultural issue.
It should be something that is on the forefront because there is an incredible opportunity for the financially disadvantaged.
